With just days left until the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Royal Mail’s Paul Taylor is getting ready for the role of a lifetime – making sure the athletes arrive at their events on time.
Paul, who works in the HR team at Greenford mail centre has been chosen as a Gamesmaker and will be providing transport for the ‘Olympic Family’ – which also includes VIPs.
Paul is just one of many Royal Mail employees who are giving up their spare time to get involved in the Games.
He said: “I wanted to be part of a once in a lifetime opportunity and was fortunate enough to be interviewed at the ExCeL centre in June 2011. Then in October I was invited to join the transport team for the Games.
“A couple of weeks ago I was driving one of the BMW’s in the Olympic livery for a day. I was learning the routes between the various venues and it then really struck home about how excited I am and how privileged I am be to be playing my small part in London 2012.”
Paul continued: “I also recognise that whilst I am certain it will be a lot of fun, there will be enormous responsibility in ensuring that competitors and officials arrive safely and on time for their events. It has already become a regular topic of conversation with my friends and family and I am sure that this will intensify once the Games begin.”
Royal Mail will soon be going for gold during London 2012. We will be issuing a Gold Medal stamp for every Team GB gold medalist – and have them on sale the next day at over 500 Post Offices across the UK.
The gold medal stamps will be the first time Royal Mail has ever issued next day stamps. They will feature, wherever possible, photographs of the Team GB athlete or team in action from their gold medal winning final. This will be the first time any host country has used action shots for Gold Medal stamps and issued them immediately, during the Games. Where this is not possible, the image will be of the athlete’s gold medal winning journey taken from a heat or from their gold medal award moment on the podium.
