Education continues to be a priority for government and also for businesses
For an update on activities and performance to date read our CSR report.
Our sustainability framework strategy provides an overview of our approach to managing our environmental impacts and our targets.

Our approach to reducing our impacts on the environment is to avoid and reduce, replace then offset.
Avoid and reduce fuel, energy and water consumption and waste creation wherever possible through increasing efficiency behaviourally and operationally.
Replace existing technology and fuel with low or zero emission alternatives to further reduce our impacts.
Offset all of our remaining emissions once avoidance, reduction and replacement options have been exhausted.
We are also working with our customers and suppliers to reduce their environmental impacts using similar principles.

At Royal Mail Group, we recognise it’s also a priority for our communities.
Royal Mail Group has supported the literacy and numeracy curriculum in primary schools for many years and we’ve produced resources to support a range of primary school activities.
We’re now extending this to include secondary schools and adult education too.
We’ve also released many of the film resources created by our GPO Film Unit, which began filming in the 1930’s.
As well as developing core learning skills, distributing these resources gives us the chance to demonstrate to our communities the kind of projects that matter to the Royal Mail Group. And, as our people get involved in taking this education material out into schools and adult learning environments, they’ll get the chance to explain why Royal Mail Group is an organisation people want to work for. Volunteering in schools
Many schools provide opportunities for their pupils to learn more about local businesses and are keen to add a bit extra to the curriculum by asking people from outside the school to talk about the world of work. Many of our people visit schools to talk about their roles and explain, for example, how a letter gets from A to B. The packs that we’ve developed also support anyone who works for Royal Mail Group if they are asked to give a talk at a local school. We encourage colleagues to take opportunities to visit schools and provide advice and resources to support this.
Young Letter Writers Competition
Royal Mail’s is currently running a letter writing competition for children aged 7-11 asking students to write to ‘My First Class Hero’.
The hero can be real, fictional or imaginary – a soldier in Afghanistan, Rebecca Adlington, Usain Bolt, Hannah Montana, JK Rowling, Cheryl Cold, Nelson Mandela, friend, family member or even a pet.
We are looking for imaginative and creative letters with a purpose, for example a request, invitation, thank you, or giving news and tell us why he or she is their hero.
The competition is for schools to use as a class based exercise for children between the ages of 7 and 11. Entries will be judged in three categories, 7-9 years, 10-11 years and for Special Achievement.
