Dow Jones Sustainability Indices

In 2017, Royal Mail was named as global sustainability leader of the Transportation industry group in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices. The Transportation industry group includes around 135 companies in marine, rail, logistics and aviation businesses. Royal Mail is included in both the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index.

We have been named a global leader in the indices every year we have been eligible for inclusion, since our flotation; however as industry group leader in 2017 we achieved our highest ever sustainability ranking.

FTSE4Good Index

The FTSE4Good Index Series is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. Transparent management and clearly-defined ESG criteria make FTSE4Good indexes suitable tools to be used by a wide variety of market participants when creating or assessing sustainable investment products.

We are one of the highest scoring companies in the FTSE4Good Index. We rank in the top eight per cent of companies, on account of our social, environmental and governance performance.

Carbon Trust Standard

The Carbon Trust Standard is the world’s leading independent certification of an organisation’s impact on the environment by verifying action on the three primary components of environmental sustainability: energy use and associated greenhouse gas (CO2e) emissions, water use and waste output.

In 2018, Royal Mail UKPIL successfully retained triple certification to the Carbon Trust Standard for carbon, water, and waste. We became the first delivery business to be awarded the triple certification in 2014-15.

The Times Top 50 Employer for Women 2018

We have been listed as a Times Top 50 Employer for Women for the fifth consecutive year, in recognition of our efforts to improve the gender balance in the organisation.

Royal Mail Group were named Leaders in Carbon Management after exceeding our carbon reduction target of 20% (from a 2004/5 baseline) four years ahead of schedule. Investments in modern LED lighting systems and energy monitoring technology contributed to a 25.7% reduction in carbon emissions by the end of 2016/17 which improved further to 29.1% by the end of 2017/18.
